It's an unbelievable mess.

One of the local reporters must be just up the road from me; she commented about people specifically abandoning their cars on US-64 in Apex, which is close enough I could hit a golf ball there.

Traffic halts as road conditions worsen in Raleigh

Here are a couple screen-captures of Google Maps traffic I took around 2:50.

Anyone who is in the local area (and can get this - not sure how that could be) and needs refuge around 55 at 64 in Apex, reply and I'll provide detailed guidance.

I think I fixed it - updated with jpgs of the same thing, rather than pngs.

Things are fairly alright here. A couple cars in ditches, but the roads themselves are clear, if appropriately sparsely populated.

I'm so glad school let out early today. Too bad we had ~400 cars trying enter and exist its one carpool lane at the same time.

When snowpocalypse 2010 happened I was in Pittsburgh. They had to call in the National Guard to help push cars up the road. Sadly I missed the show where 10 soldiers were pushing a city bus. These photos were taken 3 days after the snow fell.

A few updates:

A good friend of ours left her car at Rex Healthcare in Cary; her firefighter husband managed to get there to get her in their SUV, and at last word they were working their way back along US-1.

My wife left work just short of noon; her boss and her boss' husband stayed at work an hour or so longer than she did. They have a 13 mile commute. At last check, they're still on the road at 4 PM.

People WILL be sleeping in their cars tonight. SouthPoint Mall was closed, but has been opened as a refuge for people stranded on I-40.

My daughter's babysitter's husband is currently walking home from Wade Ave to Apex. That's about 11 miles per Google Maps.

St. David's in Raleigh, near North Hills. Our school is on the corner of the road, most of the time people exiting the school were in line behind people entering the school. Chaos for about an hour.

I live here and it took 3 hours to get 10 miles. Not cool. It also didn't help that businesses all decided to close at the same time when their was already a dusting. Watch for an increase sales of Subarus and Bridgestone Blizzaks after Friday. Work will probably be closed (lube tech, no not Jiffy Lube) and i hopefully will be able to drive my open diff Volvo wagon Friday to open at 8am. hopefully i can make it. Doubt it though. Nobody needs an oil change anyway. it's not like they do it on time anyways.

Yeah, that was pretty impressive. Woke up around 11:30 AM, no sign of anything, got kinda disappointed and worried that my afternoon class might decide to go ahead after all. Checked again at 12:45, and everything was blanketed and it was snowing hard.

As far as disasters go, though, I'll still take this over those potential tornadoes we were supposed to have a few weeks back.

Meanwhile in Charlotte, the roads are nearly abandoned and I've been out playing in my GTI all day. (edit- I'll make sure to take some pictures later)

Yup.

'Cept I work from home (and am still working, hoping to get a week's worth of work done before we lose power). My wife went to work today (against my arguments) but left before 11; she was home by about 11:30, and it just started snowing here at noon.

But as a metro area, uh huh, we're the laughingstock today. And tomorrow... and the next day... and so on until MAYBE on Tuesday things might be somewhat normal again.

For comparison, here's what the same Google Maps traffic shots look like now, at about 9:25 PM. I've never seen a more graphic representation of how Google Maps traffic gets its data - presumably, there's just about nobody still moving on the roads, hence no data to display.

Kinja'd!!!

And my local area:

Kinja'd!!!

Kudos for so many people to get off the roads. Hope most of them found their way home, but I know of several who either stopped at friends' homes, or are sharing hotel rooms with other strangers who couldn't make it home.

And we have a school play tomorrow night. Joy!

It's at the point when it's probably cheaper to run with half a cast and half an audience than to postpone to next week. That and next week is "winter break".

Tomorrow's my 15th anniversary.

I can't tell you how many deliveries and carefully laid plans are now in disarray around that... 'cause my wife might see this here. Let's just say it's been weeks of preparation that are pretty much hosed now.

Congrats! Do share your plans/results, for those of us in training.

I'm on student council-ish too, and I ordered a bunch of bluetooth speakers to put in lockers so we have a musical interlude during classes, plus Valentine's Day presents and contacts, I WILL GO BLIND. Hopefully we're back to normal by Monday.
